On 29th October 2018, Col K S Chakravarthi (Retd.), Management Consultant delivered a lecture on “Institutional perspectives of Professional Institutions in changing times; IETE – a case study” at NIQR Conference Hall.

Mr. C. V. Gowri Sankar welcomed the gathering and introduced the speaker. Col K S Chakravarthi (Retd), Executive Committee Member of NIQR Chennai Branch, has a PG Diploma in Computer Applications, PG Dip in Production Management and Business Administration from Madras University. He had served as an officer in Indian Army in the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers and retired as a Colonel after serving nearly three decades. A soldier cum Electronics and Communication Engineer to the core, he served in various capacities which include Deputy Chief Quality Control Engineer (Quality Assurance) and Production Engineer (Indigenisation and Manufacturing) at Army HQ Technical Group EME, which is the Apex Technical Body of the Indian Army. He is a Fellow Member of IETE for the past over 35 years and has held various positions at Chennai Centre as well as in the Governing council of IETE at National Level. He has also been the Past Chairman of Chennai IETE Centre 2012-14, during which period IETE Chennai won the ALL INDIA SECOND BEST CENTRE Award for that period and for the FIRST TIME.

The speaker chronicled the advances in recent times in the requirements of industries with the smart manufacturing taking the centre stage. The expectations of industries from professional Institutions have changed dramatically in the last decade.

Professionalism and professional Institutions in India have developed and changed very significantly in recent times. There are conflicting and competing definitions what it means to be professional. Professionalism remains a relevant and important concept but the exigencies of sustainable changes transcend the objectives of the profession and the professional Institution.

He explained the current trends and practices that have transformed the role of prominent professional Institutions and professional life. As a case study, he analysed the way IETE has gone about in addressing the needs of stakeholders recently and how NIQR can pick up a lot from these methodologies.

Mr. V. Raghavan, Vice Chairman, NIQR Chennai Branch summed up the proceedings and lauded the efforts of such a senior person.
